GETTING Organized and BEING Organized

I occasionally work with a client who is a very productive and thoughtful business owner. Nevertheless, this man (I’ll call him Jackson) is often distracted by a flurry of papers around his office and so I go in to help.

Jackson needed a system for an assortment of materials: reference articles and reports, meeting notes, to-do lists, travel plans and plane tickets, and much more.

This is so common in a modern-day lifestyle for busy professionals. Even for those who try to “go all digital”, disorganized paperwork is still ubiquitous and a real barrier to general productivity.

In one of these working sessions my client’s wife Daisy walked in and – with humor but also only slightly-veiled exasperation – said: “please stop getting organized and just be organized!”

Daisy is a naturally organized person. She is tidy, systematic, and deliberate with all the materials items in her surroundings. Even her daily to-do lists are written out in clear, neat penmanship on a beautifully designed notepad. Her conversations, manner of dress, and overall demeanor reflect this pattern of organized thought. For Daisy, being organized is a state of Be-ing.

I’ve worked in this office with Jackson several times. However! I would not call him messy or cluttered. Rather he is an expansive thinker, extroverted and energized by ideas and human interaction.

For Jackson, “getting organized” is its own mini-hobby: we have geeked out over planners and notepads, various filing systems, and digital organizers. For him, getting organized is play, with the bonus of a clear desk and a clear list of next actions at the end of our sessions.

For Jackson, I serve as a thinking and accountability partner, sharing in the joy of clearing spaces and creating calm. In his case, “being organized”’ is a process, with many intrinsic benefits along the way.
If you are a Daisy, I admire and aspire to be like you!

If you identify with Jackson… if you need external support, accountability, and help getting organized - or someone to enthuse with over the latest Levenger folios - I can help.
